Going Home

After your procedure it may take some time to wake up. We will monitor you in Recovery until you are awake and alert enough to be able to get home safely.

You will need to have someone to drive you home and to stay with you on the first postoperative night.

Postoperative Instructions

We will give you written post-operative instructions to tell you what to expect after your procedure. This will include information about pain relief, resuming your usual medications and activity, and follow-up arrangements with your doctors.

Pain Relief

We will ensure that you have good pain control when you go home. Paracetamol and over-the-counter NSAID medications will relieve mail pain. You may be provided with a prescription for stronger pain medication. If so, you should stop at a pharmacy on the way home to have this prescription filled.

If you have pain that is not controlled by the pain relief you have been given you should contact your doctor.

Resuming Activity

If you have had a general anaesthetic or sedation you should be able to resume normal activity after a normal night’s sleep.

If you font feel that you have received completely from the anaesthetic you should limit physical activity – don’t drive or operate heavy machinery.

Who should you call if there are problems?

You will be given a follow-up appointment with your treating Doctor. If you have problems and need help (or just advice) try to contact you treating Doctor first. If you can’t reach them, call your General Practitioner or the Emergency Department at your nearest Public hospital.

The DSU staff will call you and check on your recovery and ask you to participate in a quick survey of your care at KDH.
